The Orologion
“Orologion” (Greek:
῾Ωρολόγιον/Orológion; Church Slavonic: Часocлoвъ/Chasoslov) is the basic
liturgical book providing the unchanging texts of the daily Liturgical
Services in the Orthodox Church.. Also referred to as “Horologion” and as
“Book of Hours,” it is the primary liturgical book used by the chanter,
reader, and/or choir.
Texts for services (Greek:
ἀκολουθίες/akolouthíes) in the Horologion are the “fixed framework” for
Mesonyktikó (Midnight Office), Matins, First Hour, Third Hour, Sixth Hour,
Ninth Hour, Vespers, and Cómpline. Within these frameworks the various
“movable propers” are inserted from the
Októechos,
Triódion,
Pentekostarion, and
Menaion according to the liturgical season, and the
date of the month.
